The distinction between true metals and non-metallic metals (NMM) is almost philosophical, representing two seemingly distant approaches to miniature painting. Over my 20-year career, I've seen one method prevail over the other at different times. Today, non-metallic metals have become a standard that every new painter seems eager to pursue because it allows for diverse self-expression. It is a hyperbolic and "virtuoso" technique, especially effective in photos, unlike true metals, which, with all their real reflections, can be challenging to capture. What is often overlooked, however, is that both techniques are primarily stylistic choices, leading to vastly different results and moods. Like all other painting techniques, they offer interpretative opportunities. No matter how realistic non-metallic metals strive to be, in person, they can never deceive the observer into believing they are real metal, as a good true metal can. On the other hand, true metals cannot match the chromatic variety of reflections and effects that non-metallic metals allow. Understanding and mastering both techniques is a valuable tool for a painter, enabling them to choose based on personal taste, inclination, and, most importantly, the interpretation they want to convey in a piece. In this course, we will explore the underlying theory of painting metallic surfaces through a simple and pragmatic approach. We will create examples of both techniques on a pair of identical objects provided by me for the course. I will teach you the differences and similarities between the two techniques and share some tricks to begin mastering both.

Materials: brushes, your metallic and non-metallic colors (if you prefer to use your own).
